Convenient performance supplement Apr 15, 2010
By J. Valkonen I've been a pro/elite multisport athlete for over 25 years. As a clinician and human performance consultant, I am always interested with advances in sports medicine which includes taking another look at previous studies. The "main" ingredient of FRS is quercetin. This is typically found in grapes, apple skins, and onions. While it's good to get your nutrients from natural sources like these, while you're on the move, using sports science supplements can be better.
The quercetin in FRS is Q995. After looking this up, I eventually landed on the DARPA site. Our DoD funds advanced research focused on optimizing our military needs, which includes nutritional support. There is a biotech company that was awarded a DARPA grant which eventually yielded quercetin Q995. This company makes a chew that is available for sale to both military and civilian personnel. For active and retired military they have a great discount. It looks like FRS licenses the chews and formula from this biotech company. In fact, I bought both the FRS chews and the chews from the biotech company and they were identical, except for the wrapping, and cost. FRS has a steep mark-up.
The chews work well for hard training and racing. They are very convenient and taste pretty good. They do not require much chewing, enough to get your salivary enzymes working. They require a sip of water to flush down.
The caffeine level for 2 chews is non-ergogenic, meaning, it is not enough to trip your nervous system thus cause undesirable side effects. Rather, it's the amount that some research shows can help the absorbsion of other nutrients like B vitamins. However, some clinicians disagree that non-ergogenic caffeine loads have value.
The research on quercetin does seem to support that it can help alleviate certain inflammatory responses. For me, I have been taking quercetin for a couple of years to alleviate mild asthma.
As with all supplements, one needs to be mindful with dosage. These are not candy. There have been toxic load studies done. So the consumer should be aware not to give these to children, and not to eat more than what's recommended for a daily dose. Moreover, anyone with medical conditions should speak with his/her clinical practitioner before consuming these.
FRS has a canned drink and one that you can mix with water. The low cal flavors are good, and easy for the GI to process.
Lastly, given that Lance Armstrong is on the Board for FRS, some of their sales proceeds are directed to his Livestrong Foundation.

The Green is better than the orange May 28, 2008

These are great. You feel good without any jitters or other nasty side effects. The orange is a bit too bitter for me, but I really like the lemon-lime! Some people don't like them I see - to each his own. I didn't like the drink mix, so I find the chews easier to get down. I wonder if they have pills? That would be even better!

Horrible Taste May 09, 2008
By S. B. Kink The chews are full of great antioxidants, but unfortunately, its very difficult to eat them. The taste is horrible!! I have to chase them with a glass of water. Perhaps the orange is better.

Better than the drink at least... Jul 06, 2008

...and, that's not saying much. They do seem to help some (and, they seem to be great for my skin), but the taste is a bit hard to tolerate. And, I agree that the L&L is better than the orange. Other than the taste, the texture is not quite palatable. However, compared to the drink mix, I would consider these so yummy (yes, the drink mix, esp. the concentrate, is that bad).

Tangy Taste Jun 19, 2011
By FreelanceMe Being someone who never really feels particularly well rested I rely on my cups of tea in the morning. However, wanting to cut down my caffine intake for health reasons and to get a better nights sleep I had a bit of a dilema. A lot of energy drinks I looked at had a high caffine content as well as a hell of a lot of sugar. I predicted alot of climbing the walls with any of those so the challenge was still on
Then I came across the FRS Energy Chews. I was attracted by the vitamin content of the chews, with one serving (two chews)containing 200% of daily recommended vitamin C content and 100% of Vitamin A, riboflavin and many more. All of this for just 40 caloriesand as an added bonus they are delicious. They are certainly useful for that little extra boost needed for the gym etc.
Even better FRS chews contain green tea extract and Quercetin which I know (as a scientist and a bit of a nerd) help boost energy levels. And I also use another supplement with the two products in called Gene Eden. Its an antiviral supplement to also protects against viruses while also helping me get through the days with my lethargy. I havent been using it long but from reading reviews from other users it really does boost that helthy energised feeling in the long run.
Its sold on Amazon too, it might be worth a look
